The two classrooms at Lintha School completed in 2015.

Brooks is an independent grass-root charity set up with the purpose of advancing education in Myanmar. No management overheads or expenses are deducted meaning that 100% of all donations are used in funding our projects.

Our first project, completed in 2015, was the construction of two classrooms at the English school in Lintha Village, Ngapali, Rakhine State run by Sue Ozturk and her husband Sahin. We then funded a new computer room for a school in Bagan in the Mandalay Division.

We have taken the decision to focus our fund raising efforts on Sue’s school as it has continued to grow and goes from strength to strength. It now has 800 pupils with a further 300 attending the summer school held in March and April each year.

There have been some outstanding success stories with ex-pupils going on to attend university and working in diverse professions including IT, the legal and medical professions and even one currently destined for the diplomatic corp. Three years ago, five pupils attended a summer school in Oxford arranged by St Hugh’s College.

We are currently helping to fund the construction of four new classrooms at Sue’s school. We are also sponsoring six trainee teachers. These trainees, who come from other towns in the Rakhine State, are undertaking five years of English learning and teacher training at the school. The plan is for them to then return to their home towns of Mrauk U and Thandwe where we will set up new satellite schools.

The first satellite school opened last year at Maung Shwe Lay, down the coast from Ngapali, with two teachers trained at Sue’s school and already has about 40 pupils.
